This is the best book on core shamanism which I know of.  Core shamanism is those set of activities that all shamans perform, regardless of their culture.  Examples include recognition of non-ordinary reality and, in that, the upper, lower and middle worlds.  All shamans perform some form of activity which places them in a state to receive information from the spirits in non ordinary reality.  Examples include rapid drumming or rattling, and psychotropic drugs.

Harner covers several universal shamanic healing modalities such as divination, journeying, soul retrieval, extraction, in a brief but informative way.  Core shamanism is a spiritual practice rather than a religious practice.  It neither promotes nor advocates any religion or any change in one’s religious orientation or belief sets.  Shamanic practitioners come from all religious paths.

He deals with core shamanic elements in a pleasing and didactic way making the book a pleasant and easily recallable read.
